Introducing the 2013 Agile Salary Survey!

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Here at ASPE-SDLC we are committed to providing the Agile community with need-to-know information covering both technical and professional topics. In years past we have developed a very specific and focused salary survey for use by the Agile community. And with the growing adoption of Agile methods, the growing demand for Agile training, and the growing value of Agile skills and certification, we have decided to re-launch our Agile Salary Survey in partnership with our friends at Global Knowledge, HP and ICAgile. We want to show the Agile community just how valuable their skill set really is.

We highly encourage you to participate in the 2013 Agile Salary Survey. We want to know about your current position and what is happening in the Agile World. This survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete and you can withdraw from the survey at any point. Survey responses are strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate.

A report containing a detailed analysis of survey results will be distributed to participants soon after the survey period closes as well as available on www.aspe-sdlc.com for download.

Web Seminar Recap: Agile Metrics

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

You are what you measure. Metrics drive behavior and implementing the right metrics to measure the right things is imperative to support any improvement initiative. The metrics used in traditional project management, such as % Complete for Requirements, Code and Test do not tell where we truly are in delivering business value. The only true measure of progress is working software.

On April 25, 2013, Andy Painter examined the fundamentals of Agile Metrics and how to implement them so that we can more accurately assess the impact that agile methods has on improving the software creation process and where and when we will be done with a project.

Web Seminar Recap – Acquisition for Agile SDLC

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

On Tuesday, March 19, 2013, ASPE-SDLC’s director of Federal Agile services, and ASI’s Janet Clement, Organization Development Expert, presented the free web seminar “Acquisition for Agile SDLC.” In this one-hour presentation, Russ and Janet discussed how Agile software development is being adopted increasingly by government agencies as well as commercial entities. But by its very nature, Agile projects are flexible with regular reprioritization of deliverables. This requires non-traditional acquisition approaches for contracting for development project and technical staff augmentation. How do COs/KOs/PMs do it?

Russ and Janet gave a brief introduction to the world of Agile and how contracts are written to support dynamic, collaborative and iterative delivery. They introduced listeners to the Value Curve and how different contract types – including firm and fixed price – can be adapted to the Agile World. They also addressed the Federal guidelines that direct government acquisition teams, and commented on accepted best practices.

Web Seminar Recap: Being Agile Within A Waterfall Organization

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

Even as Agile becomes more widely utilized by organizations today, it is still very common for Agile teams to operate within an organization that still utilizes waterfall in other areas.

On Thursday, February 28, 2013, Tom Wessel informed us that compounding the challenge is the fact that many teams will need to interact with or have dependencies on these non-Agile areas. Although it may be challenging, it does not preclude teams from being able to apply Agile effectively. In this free, hour-long web seminar, he provided practical direction on how to utilize an Agile approach even when your organization still practices waterfall. He discussed avoiding the pitfalls that can set back teams that don’t effectively plan on how use Agile in a waterfall organization.

ASPE SDLC Sponsorship of Agile and Beyond

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

ASPE-SDLC is excited to announce our sponsorship of the Agile and Beyond 2013 Conference. Agile and Beyond will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 in Dearborn, MI.

This conference was chosen because of its vast array of speakers including a Keynote from Jim Benson discussing “My Favorite Anti-Patterns: 5 Hilarious (and Depressingly Common) Software Project Management Missteps” to Nathan Hughes discussing “Flatland: The delight and horror of the self-managing organization.”  These speakers and more have come from across the country to share their knowledge of Agile, collaboration, and quality. The main goal of this conference is to grow the Agile community through the spreading of knowledge and ASPE-SDLC fully supports that goal.

Valuable information from subject matter experts, chances to earn PDU’s, and a chance to mix and mingle after the conference ends are all in store for you at Agile and Beyond 2013. We hope that you will join hundreds of Agile professionals including ScrumMasters, Agile Coaches, Project Managers, Program Managers, Business Analysts, Developers, Engineers, Architects, Testers and all other Agilists. Networking sessions will give you a chance to discuss the challenges that your organizations are facing and get tips and tricks to help your team move forward.

Web Seminar Recap: Agile Adoption: The Organizational Change Dilemma

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

Agile at its foundation is a way of conducting work governed by a set of principles. Agile has been “productized” (different Agile Flavors) for specific work needs, and special practices have been established to get the work done. With all this said most organizations feel they just need to teach their team the practices and get to work. This is a major mistake.

As a way of working, Agile is a monumental transformation. It requires the worker to engage in their work with a completely different mindset. It requires organizations to monitor and measure its-self differently. Finally, it requires managers to practice a completely new set of skills when it comes to “managing” their teams (the reality is you don’t manage your team any longer in Agile). Click to continue »

Web Seminar Recap: The Agile Project Management Professional

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Many of today’s project managers are finding themselves leading and managing Agile development teams, only to find that many of the tools and techniques applied when utilizing a traditional project management approach no longer work as effectively or at all. In order to do more than survive in this iterative development environment, today’s PM must employ additional project management tools and techniques to effectively lead their teams and deliver their projects. Learning how to transition from a traditional project manager to an effective Agile Project Manager is going to be an essential step for today’s software development leaders to remain relevant. This hour long web seminar explored how today’s PM can easily and successfully make the transition to an effective Agile PM. Click to continue »
