Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Part three from Brian Rabon.

Did you know Scrum Teams Exhibit Characteristics of Reengineered Corporations?

Welcome back to the third and final installment of “Running a Scrum Team Like a Business?” In this three part series I am examining the eight characteristics of reengineered business processes, as described in Hammer and Champy’s “Reengineering the Corporation” and how they are present in organizations that have adopted Scrum. Last time we looked at how “The steps of the process are performed in a natural order”, “Processes have multiple versions” and “Work is performed where it makes the most sense”. This week we are going to focus on the final three of the eight characteristics.

Do You Take Sides? The Perils of Favoritism in Business Analysis

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Jill Richards Once again shares valuable insights on the world of Business Analysis.

Ok, so let’s chat…  I’ve enjoyed the dialog that we’ve created so far with so many of you, let’s keep it going…  Let’s discuss one of the most important topics for all Business Analysts everywhere, world wide.  Can you guess what I’m talking about?

Context Diagrams?  NO.  Use Cases?  NO.  Swim Lanes?  NO.  Process Flows?  NO.  Data Flow Diagrams?  NO.  Non-functional requirements?  NO.  NO.  NO.  NO!

So what then?  Something I’ve found is simple in theory, but not so simple in application.  It is this:

PMI Chapter Challenge Winner: 3 Months Later

Friday, November 19th, 2010

We wanted to check in with PMI Chapter Challenge Winner Brian, the president of the La Crosse WI PMI Chapter. The Chapter received 5k from the challenge.

Prior to last year, we could only accept payment at the door for our chapter events. In 2009, we started a service that allowed members to register and pay online with a credit card and, of course, there was a transaction fee. Being a small chapter we have low funds, so we had to pass that fee along to the members. I think it amounted to something like $1.05 on top of our normal dinner meeting registration (the normal meeting fee paid by members is $25 when paying by check at the door). Even though this new service and associated fee was communicated to our membership, we still dealt with some complaints.

This is just a start toward using the grant, but having the additional funds in our treasury allowed us to eliminate this fee from our members – the most important part of our chapter.

Future plans for use of the grant include bringing a notable speaker to present for the members of the La Crosse chapter.

Good to hear from you Brian! Look forward to hearing more from La Crosse WI!
