Project Cost Savings – The Dilemma

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Every project leader is faced with the challenge of budget constraints. Few projects can be fully and accurately defined at the onset. Unforeseen challenges and changing owner or end user needs can change the shape of any project at any time. Many cost saving efforts turn out to be counterproductive.

The sourcing myth that we can make it cheaper ourselves is a leading cost saving dilemma. Before considering internally sourcing your project needs make sure you understand true cost. Click to continue »

Web Seminar Recap: The Agile PMP

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Bill Gaiennie presented “The Agile PMP,” an Agile PM training web seminar, yesterday, and it’s no surprise it’s one of ASPE’s most popular. With more and more project managers using Agile methodologies, and the upcoming Agile Certification by PMI (PMI-ACP), Bill spoke about why a successful project is more than creating a plan and attempting to follow it. With his train metaphor, he explained why older methodologies are like tracks – once the tracks are laid, you have to follow them to a predetermined destination. In Agile, you can change the tracks if needs change during the project.

Is Scrum A Methodology?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

I teach hundreds of students every month and most of then walk into class calling Scrum a Methodology. Scrum by definition is “A framework for developing complex products and systems that is grounded in empirical process control theory.”1. You will notice the absence of the word “Methodology” in the definition, so are all these students wrong in calling Scrum a Methodology?

I recently read “Peopleware” by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister. In Chapter 17, “The Self-Healing System” they discuss the difference between a Methodology and a methodology (in case you didn’t notice, the only distinction is the capitalization of the first letter). Let’s examine their definitions of big “M” Methodology and little “m” methodology, to once and for all answer the questions of “Is Scrum a Methodology/methodology?” Click to continue »
