Web Seminar Recap: How to be a Great ScrumMaster

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Recap

Prior to implementing Scrum, many of us are classically trained Project Managers. We are taught to master the tools and techniques of the profession.  Unfortunately, many of us are not taught key leadership skills and we struggle to fulfill the purpose of the ScrumMaster role. When we manage, rather than lead, our teams can feel controlled and their productivity can suffer. On Tuesday, September 20th, ASPE instructor Bill Gaiennie presented the free web seminar “How to be a Great ScrumMaster.” In this web seminar, Bill discussed learning the core behaviors of a leader, so that you can help foster the kind of environment where hyper-productive Scrum teams can flourish.

Web Seminar Recap: The Disciplined Agile Team

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Some come to Agile assuming it involves less discipline than their traditional methods, but this is a misperception. Today, the need for discipline in software development is greater than it ever was. Agile answers that need, arriving at discipline through the Team. Agile Teams must collaborate to develop strong discipline in both planning and execution. On Tuesday, September 13th, ASPE instructor Andy Painter presented the free web seminar “The Disciplined Agile Team.” In this web seminar, Andy discussed how teams can obtain Agile discipline to achieve one of the core principles of delivering “working software” frequently and some of the key Agile planning and engineering practices like Continuous Planning, Test-Driven Development, Continuous Integration and Acceptance testing.

The First Free Gas Winner Has Been Chosen – You Could Be Next!

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

If you haven’t heard, ASPE is giving away Free Gas for an entire year! Three lucky winners will get to swipe away the pain at the pump with a $2,000 gas card – and the first winner has already been chosen!

Congratulations to Ann Elder of Portland, Oregon!

Ann was extremely excited to be chosen as ASPE’s first Free Gas winner (but thought her husband would be even more excited). Baffled by the magnitude of the prize, she kept saying, “You’re kidding me, right?” and even told us she wouldn’t believe it until she saw the gas card in her hands!  Well believe it Ann, and kiss your pump pains goodbye.

What would you do if you didn’t have to pay for gas for an entire year? Go on vacation?  Splurge on that toy you’ve been wanting for so long?  Maybe start a trust fund for your kid! The opportunities are endless! You still have two chances to win that $2,000 gas card, so Register Now. You could be next!

Radical Management – Agile Methods in Leadership and Management

Monday, September 12th, 2011

At its core, Agile is a set or principals on how to conduct work. Those principals were developed ten years ago by a group of software development practitioners (go to http://agilemanifesto.org/ for complete details on the principals).  These principals have been “productized” into practices or methods and a list of these in software development include Scrum, Extreme Programming, Crystal, and Lean.  They have since taken the software development world by storm with positive results.

The road block for significant, long-term and enterprise-wide productivity gains from Agile is simply management.  A software development team can make great inroads but as they try to scale their agile practices and get the necessary business input, management must “jump on the bandwagon”.  Sad to say this has not happened with any regularity.
