Great New Things for Scrum and Agile Training from ASPE

Monday, February 25th, 2013

2013 will be a year of growth and change for our Agile training and Scrum training curricula.  As the nationwide leader in Agile and Scrum training, we’ve decided one of the first steps we need to take is updating the instructional design of training materials for all our Agile training courses.

These updates include providing a full and complete table of contents for all course materials.  Each section of the course materials will have a list of objectives to be covered during class as well as a review at the end of each section to make sure all stated objectives were covered.  We’re also adding a notes section to at least one third of all slides included in our course manuals in order to provide additional relevant information to our students. Our Agile Boot Camp as well as our PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® Workshop training materials have already received updates and the others will follow.  These are terrific upgrades to our training materials and should only enhance our Agile training courses and Scrum training courses further. ASPE Partners With ICAgile to Offer the First Complete Agile Certificate Program

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

As Agile continues to mature as a product development approach and the community of Agilists swells, there is an increasing need to have a shared framework for certifying Agile experience and expertise.  While there exists a multitude of training and education options out there, there has been no certifying body to bring the diverse and extensive training options together into a single, holistic certification offering.  That is until now.

Over the last several months, I have been working closely with the International Consortium of Agile (ICAgile) to certify our Agile courses under their certification program.  I have been thoroughly impressed with the amount of forethought they have put into this program as well as the rigor they apply when certifying courses.  It has been a challenging process but one that bore a tremendous amount of value, as it provided me a great deal of time to evaluate our courseware and how it served those individuals that were looking for an Agile education.

FAQ: I Am New to Agile, Where Should I Start?

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

by: Tom McGraw, CSM – ASPE Training Advisor, Team Lead

A: With the variety of ‘flavors’ of Agile available, the numerous certifications, and the multiple certifying bodies it can be quite difficult for someone relatively new to Agile to find the best place to start.

When considering your starting points for Agile, there are a couple of important questions to consider that will help you to make the best possible decision.

Are you interested in an Agile certification, or skills-based training only?

If you are interested in receiving a certification, the Scrum Alliance provides a foundation-level Agile designation for anyone who attends the Certified Scrum Master Workshop.  The two day class teaches everything you need to pass the assessment and receive the certification.  This is a great class to introduce you to Agile/Scrum terms and techniques through hands-on training, in addition to providing you with the ‘CSM’ credential.

If certification is not necessary, or would not add additional value to you, then you can save slightly on the cost of training and attend an ASPE non-certified Agile class from our Agile Curriculum.  This curriculum was built with the intent to best prepare individuals to implement Agile on their projects.  The courses are built based on traditional SDLC roles (i.e., Project Manager, Business Analyst, Software Tester, etc.) providing the necessary skills and knowledge through hands-on activities for the individual to succeed in an Agile environment.  Courses such as the Agile Project Management, Agile Requirements, Agile Testing, and Business Analysis in Agile Projects would certainly be candidates for those individuals.  The Agile Boot Camp is our immersion program and most popular privately delivered class, incorporating all of the various traditional team roles into one true Agile team.

Management Using Agile: The Self-Organized Team is Your First Step

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

The Internet rapidly changed the United States labor market.  The U.S. pushed aside manufacturing (outsourcing it to foreign nations) and is now focused on creation and service.  In addition, we have become considerably more productive from the “tools” technology has provided.  Basically we are in the middle of a conversion to become a knowledge economy. This is fully transparent when analyzing unemployment numbers and the jobs that are available.

Available jobs stay open because workers lack the knowledge needed to fill them. The unemployed don’t have those skills needed for the so-called “knowledge worker” jobs.  Here we have a knowledge economy driven by creativity, problem solving and services. But the problem we face is management philosophies and practices are still in the “dark ages” of segmented work and mass production driven productivity methods. Click to continue »
