"Millennials Rising: Critical Success Factors for Leading and Empowering Generation Y"

Thursday, June 13, 2013
David Mantica

The newest generation to hit the workforce goes by many different names. The basic birth year bracket for this generation is 1982 – 1995 or 2000, depending on your source. The names include Generation Y, Millennial Generation, Generation Next, Net Generation, Echo Boomers and even the Peter Pan Generation.

Here is the kicker, this generation is HUGE and is needed to ensure continued economic growth. The Baby Boomer Generation is around 120M the X Generation is around 90M. We just don't have enough X Generation professionals to fill the leadership void being created by the Baby Boomer push to retirement. The Millenials will be quickly pushed into leadership positions over the next 10 years to fill this void.

This sounds much easier in writing than it is to actually do. This generation has a very specific demographic and motivation. In order to get the most out of your High Potential Millennials, you must have a detailed understanding of the characteristics of this generation and how best to support, motivate and lead this group to ensure they achieve their maximum potential.

David will review and provide point / counter points on the following topics related to Millennial talent management:

  • Very detailed look at Millennial characteristics including pros, cons and dispelling certain stereotypes
  • Motivating Millennials in the work place, including issues on compensation, benefits, work/life balance
  • Critical success discussion around empowering Millennial success through task assignment and work empowerment
  • Finally a frank discussion of issues around discipline, corrective action, and feedback circles with Millennials

Whether you are a business analyst, project manager, IT manager or director, business manager or executive, you must understand how to properly drive the growth and development of your high-potential Millennials. Based on the significantly different characteristics of this generation, a detailed understanding is necessary for success. Or, as this generation is very willing to do, they will quickly leave and find something that does fit who they are.

"Agile Adoption: The Organizational Change Dilemma "

Tuesday, June 11, 2013
David Mantica

Agile at its foundation is a way of conducting work governed by a set of principles. Agile has been "productized" (different Agile Flavors) for specific work needs, and special practices have been established to get the work done. With all this said most organizations feel they just need to teach their team the practices and get to work. This is a major mistake.

As a way of working, Agile is a monumental transformation. It requires the worker to engage in their work with a completely different mindset. It requires organizations to monitor and measure its-self differently. Finally, it requires managers to practice a completely new set of skills when it comes to "managing" their teams (the reality is you don't manage your team any longer in Agile).

This 1-hour web seminar discusses the transformational challenge Agile presents to an organization. It will go over organizational change strategies necessary to make the jump, as well as cover different start-up models instead of complete enterprise adoption. The goal of this presentation is to properly prepare an organization for the "human" challenges associated with the decision to move to agile

"Test Driven Development "

Thursday, May 30, 2013
Kevin Klinemeier

As teams constantly develop small incremental features by adding, modifying, re-factoring, and re-designing existing software, many challenges emerges with each and every iteration. Among these challenges is ensuring previously delivered functionality is still correct and newly created functionality works as expected within a single iteration. Test Driven Development (TDD) can help address these issues with greater safety and confidence while supporting the team to create better quality software and simpler designs. TDD is built on a set of values that testing and quality are paramount, change is expected and both are constantly embraced.

"Agile Concepts for Management and Leadership Success "

Tuesday, May 21, 2013
David Mantica

Agile principles are dominating the discussion in software development. As it goes mainstream, software practitioners in almost every vertical are utilizing what Agile offers. It is only a matter of time before other professional disciplines begin to incorporate Agile for professional and organizational success. Radical Management is one such incorporation. Started by Steve Denning and chronicled in his book The Leader's Guide to Radical Management, it uses the foundational values of Agile and develops specific principles and practices for managers and leaders.

In this web seminar, you will initially look at the foundational values of Agile and discuss how and why they can be interpreted and utilized for managers and leaders inside and outside software development. Then dive into the specifics of Radical Management, the fundamental rationale for it, the defining principles and how those principles are acted upon. There is NO doubt Agile values can be used by managers and leaders. The challenge for them is the struggle to redefine themselves and their place in a business world that is rapidly going Agile. However, if they can cross this "chasm," the business opportunities on the other side in

"5 Levels of Agile Planning "

Thursday, May 16, 2013
Bill Gainnie

When a software development professional first hears about Agile, they are often initially incredulous that this type of approach can work due to a misperception that Agile simply means "no planning." This belief could not be further from the truth, as Agile teams tend to plan more throughout the course of a project than a traditional approach, albeit in a different fashion than they may be accustomed to. Rather than planning once at the beginning of a project, Agile teams practice continuous planning throughout the project. This web seminar will explore the five Levels of Agile planning, and how they help teams ensure that teams are able to benefit from what they learn over the course of their development and delivery efforts.

"Agile Education and Certification: ICAgile Roadmap Primer "

Tuesday, May 7, 2013
Dr. Ahmed Sidky
Jen Stone Browne

Agile is a transformation. Going to Agile you must change the way you think about and conduct work across an entire organization. The benefits are considerable but the path is not easy. ICAgile (The International Consortium for Agile) has developed a road map for education and certification to support enterprise organizations as they pursue Agile adoption. This road map consists of professional, expert and master levels and includes a combination of training and gate evaluations.

In this web seminar, the complete picture of the ICAgile Roadmap will be presented. The ICP (ICAgile Certified Professional), CEC (Continuing Education Certification), ICE (ICAgile Certified Expert) and ICM (ICAgile Certified Master Agilist) will be discussed, including details on learning objects and requirements needed at each level.

Also included in the presentation is a complete update on the tracks professionals can follow based on their work responsibilities and career goals. The tracks developed represent the most comprehensive coverage of skills available which enterprises need for the high level guarantee of success for their Agile adoption.

Finally, the basics of certification administration and maintenance will be discussed to provide you the information you need to make your first steps into certification about study and learning, not about the minutia.

"Agile Certifications Options Primer"

Thursday, May 2, 2013
Tom McGraw, VP of Public Sales – ASPE, Inc.

Agile has made the leap and is now mainstream. The reality is, once something becomes mainstream, hiring needs to happen. When this happens, hiring managers need a baseline to judge applicants. In this one hour web seminar we will discuss what the components are for a traditional certification program, one that will gain respect and recognition. From there we will discuss the value of certifications from an employer prospective and an employee prospective. The reality is they are not mutually exclusive. Finally we will detail the top Agile certification in the market place and give details on steps to achieve each certification, including thought on the best certification based on needs.

You Will Learn:

  • Difference between certification and certificate programs
  • What the elements are for certification programs
  • How employers use and value certifications
  • How employees use and value certifications
  • Scrum Alliance certification stack

"Business Case Development for Business and IT Professionals"

Thursday, April 25, 2013
Sherry Pate

The rubber stamp for project approvals has been shelved in 2009. Only projects that can show direct and quick return on investment or those that have made a compelling and believable "strategic importance" pitch will be approved. The "strategic importance" pitch is very risky and can come at the cost of your project not getting approved. The logic path for Project Leaders and Management professionals is to take the business case approach to getting projects approved. The problem is most professionals "think" they know how to build a professional and creditable Business Case. Most of us suffer from delusional optimism, which also can come at the cost of your job.

Presenter:
Sherry Pate is a PMP with a proven track record of Project Management success and a strong expertise in Project Management training. She is also a Business Analyst who has trained over 1,500 professionals on Business Analysis techniques. Her extensive experience not only includes Project Management but also Software Development, Portfolio Management and Program Management. In this presentation Sherry will cut to the chase and give you a pragmatic real–world look at Business Case development. She will provide you tips and techniques to protect yourself from delusional optimism and build a case for your project(s) based on rational expectations, on real estimates and on real needs. Project and business professionals have two choices right now, one is to sit on the sidelines and wait till the economic environment is better to push their project(s) through or learn how to build a convincing business case.

"Why Create A Business Analyst Center of Excellence (BACOE)?"

Thursday, April 4, 2013
Sherry Pate

Project problems have plagued companies worldwide for decades. Many projects are over budget, behind schedule, and implemented with poor quality. As companies struggle to figure out why, many have discovered a consistent trend: Projects struggle or fail because of poorly defined and misunderstood requirements.

As companies try to improve their project delivery processes, many are focusing on improving Requirements Engineering activities and adding more Business Analysts. With the number of Business Analysts increasing, so is the potential for inconsistency and poor requirements quality. Companies might be faced with questions such as: How can Requirements Engineering be streamlined and implemented consistently? How will Business Analysts be coached, trained, and mentored? How will Business Analysts know which process to follow and which templates to use? How will executive management know that the increased focus on Requirements Engineering is having the positive effect on project delivery they were hoping for?

The answer to all of these questions is the same: The Business Analyst Center of Excellence. Join us for this free one-hour web seminar to learn more!

Presenter:
Sherry Pate is a PMP with a proven track record of Project Management success and a strong expertise in Project Management training. She is also a seasoned Business Analyst who has trained over 1,500 professionals on Business Analysis techniques. "The SharePoint Business Analyst"

Tuesday, March 19, 2013
David Mantica

Sometimes we wonder how Microsoft ever came up with SharePoint. While SharePoint is the perfect enterprise integration platform, Microsoft is a transactional product focused marketing company. It just doesn't fit. This is a primary reason for the poor adoption and use of the most powerful business application on the market, SharePoint 2010.

The reality is, that for a large enterprise to gain the competitive advantage and efficiencies SharePoint can provide, it must look at how, and more importantly, who is driving adoption. This is why the SharePoint BA is so critical. It isn't about governance or basic administration. Yes those things are important but you're putting the chicken before the egg. The egg is USE!!! We are right in the middle of the transformation of power in IT systems, moving from geeks to the users because the users are becoming geeks. SharePoint is the pinnacle of user enabled IT power.

This web seminar will discuss the vast potential of real world applications for SharePoint. From there we will dig into the traditional role of a Business Analyst and finish off by discussing what the roles and responsibilities would be for a SharePoint Business Analyst. The goal of this seminar is to provide details on how organizations can increase the use of SharePoint in the enterprise, saving a significant amount of time and money, leading to quicker time to market.

"Federal Agile in 2013"

February 7, 2013
David Mantica

Agile grows, people who learned about it at a 5th, 6th or 7th degree of separation from the "founding fathers" of Agile sometimes see it as process or a science type method. That sentiment about Agile isn't 100% incorrect, but the reality is that Agile is much more at its core. It is based on a core perspective from which process/methods flow out. It is about seeing the world, conducting yourself, working in a team, and doing actual work the Agile way.

Sounds like a cult, right? Well, in some cases it is. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. If a "utopian" work environment is something you are looking to be a part of, Agile can possibly take you there.

Remember the four basic Agile values:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  • Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • Responding to change over following a plan

If done right you can gain high morale and develop a highly productive work environment (maybe even utopian depending on your perspective). The interesting thing about these values though, is that they pretty much run counter to how we currently conduct business, and how human beings naturally think, act and react.

In this presentation you will learn about the methods around these four basic values and learn about the change management challenges that come with agile adoption. We will touch on what Scrum means, how to conduct an iteration, what is a task board, how to do a proper retrospective, and how planning is handled in Agile. On top of that we will review government adaption of agile and use our experience with the VA as a semi-case study on Agile in government. Finally, the topic of certification will be reviewed with a detailed discussion of both Scrum Alliance certification programs and the new PMI-ACP credential.

This session will give you a working knowledge of agile and allow you dig deeper into its methods and practices with a solid, foundational understanding. We will also discuss Federal government policies and procedures and how those are impacted by agile deployment.

"Agile Creativity: A Look at how Google is Supporting the Adoption of Agile Methods into Marketing and Agency-level Creative"

January 31, 2013
David Mantica and Chris Knotts

Rapid, scalable, flexible, collaborative: words that all marketers strive for to achieve real-world success in their creative process. And beyond the marketing world, business leaders everywhere are realizing that the new economic paradigm rewards speed, flexibility, and response to change.

If you've read The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, you know how FAST economic disruptions now move through the world economy. Some disruptions are flashes in the pan. Others bring about marketplace revolutions that none of us have the tools to entirely predict, or even catch early indicators regarding the direction they will take.

So in the face of this reality, marketers need to look at work values, principles, and processes that enable the nimbleness required to "catch a black swan". In search of practices which enable this success, creative leaders in marketing fields are looking to their brethren in another profession which is high-stakes and project-based: software development. They are finding that the foundational values (and the practices associated with them) of highly successful software development philosophies such as Agile can also be leveraged to bring speed, quality, and flexibility to processes which yield fantastic creative.

This is Agile Creativity: the fusing of the software world's Agile values with the creative initiatives of marketing. In this web seminar, we will discuss in detail the core values of Agile work, then look at the practices and principles being implementing to fuse marketing needs with those values. The outcome is a powerful structure for quickly bringing ideas to life, rapidly developing iterations that increase quality, and incorporating feedback and input earlier in the creative process.

"Agile Concepts for Management and Leadership Success"

January 22, 2013

However, if they can cross this "chasm," the business opportunities on the other side in today's environment are significant.

"The Business Analysts Role in Transformation"

January 15, 2013
David Mantica

Simply put, the Business Analyst's role can be broken into three components: Enterprise Analysis, Process Modeling, and Requirements Engineering. Each component can and does bring value to an enterprise organization, especially in the face of outsourcing and rapidly increasing and evolving user needs.

The Agile Framework, with its specific practices around software development, offers a very different approach to project success. One that on initial view reduces the value the BA brings to the enterprise. The reality is that Agile is pointing a light at a trend in BA work that if continued significantly reduces the value received by the enterprise. That light I'm referring to is that in a vast majority of cases, enterprises have focused the BA role around requirements engineering. Of the three primary roles, it is the most repeatable and scalable and one that can be measured. The problem it is that it is the one that provides the least value to the enterprise and, ultimately, can be outsourced (under proper conditions).

This presentation looks at the current industry perspective and use of the BA and how it was manifested. From there we will look at the need enterprise organizations have and how the evolution and maturation of the BA can easily fill that role. After that we will look at the skills needed for a BA to properly fulfill this need and how organizations can effectively hire for or help to develop these skills.

The BA role, is a game changer for an enterprises ability to capture competitive advantage from its IT systems and software. When executed and nurtured, an enterprise can effectively implement the "most" needed tools and systems for its user community to drive customer fulfillment. This presentation talks about how to drive the BA role in that direction.

You will learn:

  • Currently accepted industry practices on BA use
  • The Agile effective, how BA will evolve in an Agile framework
  • The Solution Architect, the next evolution of the BA
  • The skills needed to drive a successful team of BA Solution Architects

"Agile Certifications Options Primer"

January 8, 2013
David Mantica and Tom McGraw

Agile has made the leap and is now mainstream. The reality is, once something becomes mainstream, hiring needs to happen. When this happens, hiring managers need a baseline to judge applicants. In comes certification. The agile certification market has grown extensively over the last two years with both large and small organizations entering the market place.

  • IC Agile Certification stack
  • PMI Agile based certifications
  • Other Agile certifications (Flavor based and holistic)

"Intrapreneurship: The Key to Capturing Value out of Major Disruptions for Companies (Large and Small)"

November 27, 2012
Brad Lienhartb, Fed Hathaway and Scott Baker

If only Borders or Barnes & Noble had the right intrapreneur in their organization, maybe Amazon's rise wouldn't have been so impactful to them. If only Yahoo incorporated the position of Intrapreneur into its culture maybe they would be neck and neck with Google instead of on the outside looking in.

In this web seminar we will provide a detailed look at Intrapreneurship. Basically smart organization will seek out individuals who like to invent, innovate and want to be on the front lines of changes. These individuals will work just like entrepreneurs but will work within the structure of a company, and they are Intrapreneurs.

An intrapreneur is someone who has an entrepreneurial streak in his or her DNA but choose to align his or her talents with an organization in place of creating his or her own. These professional are critical to the success of organizations as corporations have to continuously deal with the speed of disruption and disruptive technologies.

Learn what skills and talents are required to be a successful intrapreneur, understand the techniques an intraprenuer can use to distill ideas and focus their efforts and learn how intraprenuers must maneuver to successfully incorporate the right idea into their organization.

"Integrating VALUE Into Long Duration Projects"

November 16, 2012
Dr. Gary Evans

The concepts of delighting your customer, continuous improvement, and self-organized team don't only live within an Agile project. Some projects based on scope, internal culture, rules and processes require different approaches. But a different approach should not stop professionals for practicing "Agile" values.

It is a principle of Project Management that every project will produce something of value for the Sponsor (Business Value). This value can be strategic (e.g. creating a new market; improved customer retention) or tactical (e.g. adding new function to a system; optimizing business process). While the Business Value of a project is always implicit, it is often not clearly defined at the start of a project. This is a mistake. Without this information, the project manager is left without important guidance on how to plan and execute the project, and realization of intended Business Value is placed at risk.

Project Portfolio Management makes it very clear: every project is an investment. It is essential that all of the players understand what is at stake so that the project can be defined and executed in such a way that Business Value is maximized. Having clear project objectives allows us to measure the success of the project to the point of its conclusion. Measuring Business Value after project completion goes further, allowing us to measure success at the business level. It should be the goal of every Project Manager to create a solid foundation for Business Value realization. Making Business Value an integral part of project planning and execution adds depth and power to the most fundamental concepts in project management.

This web seminar establishes a practical definition of Business Value, and then explores what optimization of that value means for our understanding of the role of Project Manager, conduct of the project, and successful realization of Business Goals. Topics include:

  • Project Objectives versus Business Objectives – assigning accountability
  • Seeing projects as investments
  • Rethinking the roles of Sponsor and Project Manager
  • Common project practices that diminish Business Value
  • Managing projects to optimize Business Value realization

"Writing Agile Contracts"

October 18, 2012
Tom Wessel

Agile, in its original form, was a framework utilized by product development organizations as a way to manage the creation and delivery of products for their customers. But as Agile continues to grow in popularity and is used more widely by a variety of organizations, many teams are finding it challenging to apply an Agile approach to a project that involves either third party developers or off-the-shelf products that need to be configured. In each of these situations, Agile is still applicable, but it requires forethought in the way that working agreements and contracts are written so as to provide the flexibility that Agile promises while still maintaining the legal protections that the contract requires.

"Improved User Story Writing Techniques"

September 27, 2012
Steve Davis

One of the most significant differences between Agile and Waterfall is the manner is which requirements are documented. As the Agile equivalent of requirements, user stories are brief requirements statements captured from an end-user's perspective. They are not meant to capture all of the detail that is required to actually develop a feature, instead they are merely placeholders for a future conversation where the necessary details are documented right before the feature is built. And although very simple in format, it can take time and practice to write well formed user stories that serve their intended purpose.

This hour long web seminar will provide guidance on how to write more effective user stories that can be used on your Agile project.

"Introduction to Analytics"

August 20, 2012
Juan Santa-Coloma

The expansion of the capabilities for efficient gathering data has provided the foundation for the expansion of the analysis of operational data to provide information in support of business decision making. The growth of capabilities for efficiently gathering data and the advent of software tools for decision-making support have led businesses to demand the effective analysis of raw data to sustain or achieve a competitive advantage. That demand is driving the need for organizations to expand their internal capabilities to perform the required analysis of the raw data.

This web seminar introduces key topics in the application of probability theory and statistical analysis to extract valuable information from the transactional data to identify critical variables and to draw reliable conclusions to apply in decision making. Next we cover the application of regression analysis to quantify the relationship among variables and address its value in explaining and predicting behavior. The topic of predictive model is expanded to introduce the concept of time series analysis of historical data as the building block for creating forecasting models of future events and results. Statistical measures are introduced to provide a measure of the quality of the predictive and regression models. The last topic addresses the development of decision models to determine the needs for information and the application of quantitative models in addressing those needs.

"How to Estimate in Agile"

August 9, 2012
Tom Wessel

In an effort to improve their planning efficiency, Agile teams utilize leaner, lighter written requirements to document the needs for their product. This approach allows teams to focus on creating effective, working software sooner, but also presents a challenge for these teams when they are required to effectively size their project work and predict when they will complete their development. In order to address this dilemma, Agile teams must employ an enhanced estimation technique that allows them to evaluate the level of effort required to deliver their product.

This one hour web seminar will discuss the method today's Agile teams use to solve the common problem of creating estimates when the complete set of requirements are not known.

"The SharePoint Business Analyst"

July 24, 2012
David Mantica

Sometimes we wonder how Microsoft ever came up with SharePoint. SharePoint is the perfect enterprise integration platform and Microsoft is the perfect transactional, product-focused, marketing company. It just doesn't fit, which is the main problem surrounding the poor adoption and use of the most powerful business application on the market, SharePoint 2010.

The reality is, for a large enterprise to gain the competitive advantage and efficiencies SharePoint can provide, it must look at HOW or better yet WHO is driving adoption. Here is why the SharePoint BA is so critical. It isn't about governance or basic administration. Yes, those things are important, but they are the chicken before the egg. The egg is USE!!! We are right in the middle of the transformation of power in IT systems moving from geeks to the users, because the users are becoming geeks. SharePoint is the pinnacle of user enabled IT power.

This web seminar will discuss at a high level the vast potential real world applications for SharePoint. From there we will dig into the traditional role of a business analyst, and finish by discussing what the roles and responsibilities would be for a SharePoint business analyst. The optimal goal is to provide details on how organizations can increase the use of SharePoint in the enterprise, which will save a significant amount of money and time and lead to much quicker time to market.

"Business Analyst Work Plan"

June 22, 2012
Billie Johnson

As a business analyst, you are most likely highly organized, but without the planning tools and business analysis expectations; you may have the appearance of being disorganized in your plight to deliver effective requirements. If we do not pause to plan our work, it is as if you are trying to ride a bicycle before the wheels have been attached. You might be able to sit on the bike and think about where you want to go, but you won't get anywhere at all. In a rush to provide a solution, the problem still might not be resolved because users are still unskilled. So the cycle of design a solution, find a problem, design a solution, and find a problem just continues, with everyone who is involved still unhappy and unproductive.

Most organizations have identified productivity as a strategic goal for all employees. Business analysts can contribute by developing their plans and working toward the plans. "Agile Primer for Government Managers"

June 12, 2012
David Mantica

As Agile grows, people who learned about it at a 5th, 6th or 7th degree of separation from the "founding fathers" of Agile sometimes see it as process or a science type method. That sentiment about Agile isn't 100% incorrect, but the reality is that Agile is much more at its core. It is based on a core perspective from which process/methods flow out. It is about seeing the world, conducting yourself, working in a team, and doing actual work the Agile way.

Plenty of factors need to be considered before attempting this highly disciplined approach. Learn from the mistakes other organizations have made and discover which pitfalls to avoid to ensure that your first attempt at applying an Agile approach will be met with a successful outcome. This hour-long web seminar will explore these areas and provide clear steps your team and organization should consider to provide a clear set of tools to maximize the opportunity for best results possible.

"Your Idea is Worthless…Unless you can Powerfully Present it!"

June 5, 2012
David Mantica

A great idea is meaningless and useless unless it can be communicated properly whether written or orally. The problem with writing down great ideas is you have to trust someone will actually read what you wrote. In today's business environment, that is something I would not necessarily trust. The only true, quick way you can get your idea out is through presenting it.

What does that mean though? Is a presentation something speakers do at events? The reality is you present every time you have an oral communication with someone. A presentation can be one to one, one to two, or one to hundred. It can also be a group discussion with each person contributing to a team or on a panel. The dynamic to focus on, whether you are with one person or a group, is that you are presenting to them. This element creates a number of challenges but can also be used to your advantage.

When you write, you can hide behind your words. When you present you are your words. Your audience creates an instant image of you as you begin, and then that image ebbs and flows during your presentation. That image, when not managed correctly, can overshadow or even block the message you are trying to convey.

In this web seminar we will review very pragmatic skills, tools and techniques to properly prepare and execute a successful presentation. We will look at planning, preparation, delivery techniques and delivery challenges. This is very little on theory. The focus is on actions you can do before and during the presentation to increase the power of your message and the success of your idea.

"The Top 5 Problems with Succession Planning"

June 4, 2012
Kelley Bruns

Succession planning is a process of identifying key positions within an organization to ensure employees are recruited, discovered, and developed to fill positions within your workplace. "Enhanced Agile Estimation Techniques"

May 22, 2012

This one hour webinar will discuss the method today's Agile teams use to solve the common problem of creating estimates when the complete set of requirements are not known.

As companies work to migrate their software development approach from Waterfall to Agile, they often begin to discover that the limited set of tools offered by the Agile (or Scrum) framework alone do not satisfy organizational needs. Larger projects, more teams, and limited resources are often the hallmark and impetus to implement a Lean development approach where value streams and waste elimination drive the creation of better products, more profitable efforts, and fully utilized resource teams. In this web seminar we will discuss the process, function, and benefits of utilizing Kanban and Lean to streamline your efforts.

"Navigating the Waters of Business Process Improvement"

May 9, 2012
Kelley Bruns

When your boss comes to you with a problem, how often does he/she provide you with a manual on how to solve the problem? If you answered never, you are absolutely correct! If your boss knew how to solve the problem they wouldn't come to you in the first place. Your boss hired you to solve business problems, but how can effectively do that? Simply by learning and using the strategies of business process improvement (BPI). When you improve your organization's business processes, you can generate the crucial benefits of cost savings, efficiency gains, improved customer loyalty, and increased profits to your organization's bottom line.

This all sounds straightforward but navigating the waters of BPI can be daunting, especially during challenging times. In this web seminar, you will learn how to identify, plan, analyze, and redesign business processes. In addition, you will discover how to acquire needed resources, implement a redesigned business process, and continually improve business processes. You will leave with an understanding of how to tap into the power of business process improvement.

"Business Analyst Work Plan"

May 7, 2012
Billie Johnson

We are challenged to deliver with speed, increased productivity & efficiency, and to help deliver a competitive advantage. Management will most likely press to complete the analysis phase quicker than possible. The plans will provide you the ammunition to discuss the options to meet aggressive timelines. "Agile Adoption: The Organizational Change Dilemma"

April 17, 2012
David Mantica

Agile at its foundation is a way of conducting work governed by a set of principles. Agile has been "productized" (different Agile Flavors) for specific work needs and special practices have been established to get the work done. With that said, most organizations feel they just need to teach their team the practices and get to work. The reality is that is a major mistake.

As a way of working, Agile is a monumental transformation. It requires the worker to engage in their work with a completely different mindset. It requires organizations to monitor and measure itself differently. Finally it requires managers to practice a completely new set of skills when it comes to "managing" their teams (the reality is you don't manage your team any longer in Agile).

This 45 minute web seminar discusses the transformational challenge Agile presents to an organization. It will go over organizational change strategies necessary to make the jump, as well as cover different start up models instead of complete enterprise adoption. The goal of this presentation is to properly prepare an organization for the "human" challenges associated with the decision to move to Agile methods.

"The Agile Business Analyst"

April 16, 2012
Kris Ashton

There is a lot of confusion, misconceptions, and heated debates about the role of a business analyst in Agile projects. But think of it this way: Agile projects, like all projects, have requirements—and requirements are not just "user stories." There is a need to go from high-level stories to the detailed requirements needed to implement specific functionality.

In this web seminar, we will explore the role of a business analyst in that requirements-development process, and discover other ways a business analyst adds value to an Agile project throughout its life cycle.

"The 5 Levels of Agile Planning"

April 12, 2012
DavisBase

When a software development professional first hears about Agile, they are often initially incredulous that this type of approach can work due to a misperception that Agile simply means "no planning." This belief could not be further from the truth. Agile teams tend to plan more throughout the course of a project than a traditional approach, albeit in a different fashion than they may be accustomed to. Rather than planning once at the beginning of a project, Agile teams practice continuous planning throughout the project. This web seminar will explore the five Levels of Agile planning, and how they help teams ensure that teams are able to benefit from what they learn over the course of their development and delivery efforts.

"Test Driven Development"

March 22, 2012

As teams constantly develop small incremental features by adding, modifying, refactoring, and re-designing existing software, many challenges emerges with each and every iteration.

In this web seminar, we will discuss these benefits, the TDD Cycle, how to get started and challenges facing teams adopting TDD.

"Serving the Enterprise…Solutions for Enhanced Productivity"

March 1, 2012
David Mantica

With head count down in most organizations business leaders have to continue to drive productivity. The challenge though is twofold.

  1. Productivity gains will only go on for so long. New skills will have to be incorporated in order to maintain and especially increase productivity over time.
  2. The short-term productivity is great. Over the long-term, however, driving productivity without some investment in innovation is a receipt for disaster.

With the jobless recovery, capital has been available for training staff, but the main issue has been time. It is near impossible for many to find time away from the office during regular business hours. As this trend continues, organizations will have to get more and more creative to find ways to provide the skills, tools, and technique enhancements their workers need to drive innovation and keep the productivity momentum going.

In this 45-min web seminar David Mantica, President of ASPE, Inc. will review service offerings we have created to help enterprise organizations reduce the time investment needed for skills development. The Internet has become a fantastic tool for providing solid knowledge transfer in the form of e-learning and web seminars. In this session, we will review the innovative solutions ASPE has developed to provide real-world skills, tools and techniques training (not just knowledge transfer) in a more convenient way than standard face-to-face sessions.

"Predictive Analytics & Data Mining: What Really Works and How to Get Started"

February 14, 2012
Tony Rathburn
Organizations are increasingly finding themselves overwhelmed with data, yet starved for actionable information. As such, organizations are migrating quickly to the utilization of business intelligence (BI) and advanced analytics. One of the fastest growing areas within BI -- Predictive Analytics & Data Mining (PADM) –- provides substantial returns when implemented properly, as demonstrated in a wealth of case studies. PADM is being explored within these organizations as a way to improve their decision making processes, thereby increasing efficiency and minimizing risk. Yet, the vast majority of practitioners who attempt PADM implementations approach the discovery process like any other IT project. When their projects fail or fall short, they prematurely dismiss the practice and delay the tremendous gains they could otherwise reap with PADM. This web seminar is intended for stakeholders, functional managers and business practitioners in business, industry, government and academia, who have made substantial investments in data collection, storage, retrieval, visualization and basic analysis but may not have the technical or strategic experience necessary to chart an effective roadmap to uncover the valuable predictive insights hidden within their existing data. No prior knowledge is required.

"Prototyping Techniques for Better Web Design"

February 10, 2012
Billie Johnson

When designing a web presence, there's often a disastrous disconnect between the design of user experience, system functionality, and visual design. Sometimes design is by committee, done on the fly, or worse: given no truly structured process at all. By investing in a few common sense analysis measures at the beginning of your project, you can ensure that the rollout of your web presence will be as efficient and effective as possible. In this free one-hour web presentation, business analysis expert Billie Johnson, CBAP, presents some common-sense methods to bring your team together for determining proper direction and function before moving to design and production. By determining function, then moving on to form, then implementing form efficiently by prototyping core features of your design, you can effectively address user and customer needs and combine them with elegant packaging. This focus on business needs, user experience and an organized approach to prototyping key foundations of your web presence with integrated visual design allows you to maximize your investment in web design. Billy will show you how to leverage basic techniques proven in the world of business analysis, and apply them to your online design efforts when the time comes for you to roll out a shiny new website or user interface. ASPE's creative director Chris Knotts, PMP contributed to this program.

"Selling Business Analysis in Your Organization"

January 18, 2012
Greg Reinhart
We have a bunch of projects going on. We are amazed when a project completes and can be used to improve the corporate environment. Our users complain that projects are often turned over to them late with less functionality than they had planned on receiving. Do you have Business Analysts (BA's) in your organization? Are they allowed to do some of the things that BA's are supposed to do? Or are they reactionary and constantly being told just to "get it done!" Let's spend some time examining what BA's should be doing, and how they are really a strategic asset to the company. Projects should be delivered with little surprises to the end user. Users, or the customer, should be involved throughout the project/product development so that the time, money and resources that you are spending on getting things developed can actually provide results that achieve corporate goals and make people more, not less, productive.

"Product Theory: Real-World Innovation and Creativity Enablement"

June 29, 2011
David Mantica
Innovation and creativity are business bingo words for sure. Even though they conjure up visions of verbose, empty-suite executives clamoring on and on, they are still critical. At the end of the day, your business grows by entering new markets, adding new products and reacting to changes that impact your products or customers. All which are empowered and amplified by innovation and creativity. A product portfolio is like a well. The deeper you have to go to find interested customers, the more expensive it gets, and the more work you have to put in to getting business. So if you can find new products or quickly locate new customers, you continue to get the "richness" of margin and easy customers from the beginning stages of the well.

"Proving Use Cases Correct"

May 16, 2011
Al Cline
The greatest source of defects originate from requirements. If requirements defects can be removed, the quality of a product can be more than doubled! This presentation discusses how to reduce requirements-based defects to close to zero, and shows how the techniques apply to both traditional and agile project processes. Al Cline shows how use cases can be identified by proper business flow analysis (use case completeness), and how use cases can be validated (use case correctness) by UML validation, a major contribution by Dr. Ivar Jacobson, one of the founders of UML. Mr. Cline has had tremendous success with this process, resulting in 68% of his projects with no defects at all when the product went into production.

How do you reap the rewards of better software and efficiency while satisfying documentation requirements? Whether required by your clients, like CMMM(I), or due to the nature of your business, like HIPAA or Sarbanes-Oxley, certain metrics are a business requirement. But, agile teams traditionally avoid such documentation like the plague. Can these worlds co-exist? "Business Case Development for Business and IT Professionals"

The rubber stamp for project approvals has been shelved for the last few years. Only projects that can show a direct and quick return on investment or those that have made a compelling and believable "strategic importance" pitch will be approved. The "strategic importance" pitch is very risky and can come at the cost of a project not getting approved. The logical path for Business and IT professionals is to take the business case approach to getting projects approved. Business and project professionals have two choices right now, one is to sit on the sidelines and wait till the economic environment is better to push their project(s) through or learn how to build a convincing business case.

The term "micromanagement" definitely (and deservedly) has very negative connotations. Nearly everyone agrees that as a management technique, it leaves a great deal to be desired. But at the same time, managers rarely, if ever, recognize the micromanagement style in themselves. What constitutes a micromanager and do you display the symptoms? How can you correct the micromanagement tendencies in your management approach? If micromanagement is not effective, then how do you deal with procrastinators and other problem team members? This seminar looks at why individuals micromanage, how to correct your own tendencies, and how to deal with situations where you might tend to find yourself taking the micro approach.

They might be able to say if the project will meet the due date, but have no clue if spend is according to budget or if all the planned work is really getting done. In this workshop, we focus on what earned value analysis is, what it can and can't do, and what it takes to make it work.

"Transitioning from Waterfall to Agile: The Waterfall Trap"

March 20, 2009
Richard Perrin
For many years since the 1970s most IT projects have been run like projects in the construction industry. The approach is typically called the ˜waterfall" approach because each phase of the project is a direct outgrowth of the preceding phase, in a series of finish-to-start relationships: Analysis, requirements, design, code, test, deploy. Standish Group studies have shown that only 35% of IT projects complete successfully; the remaining 65% are challenged or fail outright. We will explore the issues with the waterfall approach in software development and discuss how an agile approach drives high levels of customer satisfaction, software quality, and developer productivity.

Consider also that today many of these projects are run on email, Microsoft Excel and shared network drives.
